Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
