No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
