Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
