The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
