Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
