During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains.
